Outback Features
Curb appeal, all-road credentials
Sporting a ruggedly designed front bumper, lower front grille, fog light covers and rear bumper, the Subaru Outback remains as dynamic and athletic looking as ever. The muscular yet streamlined design incorporates sleek aerodynamics for better fuel efficiency and stronger construction for added safety and toughness. The design is bold and purposeful, appropriate when you consider the Outback, where it comes from and where it’s capable of taking you.
Roof Rails with Swing-in-place Crossbars
To make the most of the cargo-carrying capacity of the Outback, this roof rack system with swing-in-place crossbars also features cargo tie-down hooks. The rear crossbar can be shifted towards the back of the vehicle to better support longer items, such as canoes or kayaks. These roof rails are standard on all models except the Premier, which comes equipped instead with a sleeker, lower-profile set of roof rails. Side sill steps provide a firm base upon which to load all manner of tricky items.
Power Tailgate
This dynamic feature helps make loading and unloading the Outback quick and easy. The button on the key fob activates the power tailgate, which features auto-closure and a safety sensor that causes the tailgate to reverse direction if it encounters any resistance. The tailgate also has a stop-position memory function for parking garages with low clearance or for when you’re hauling long objects on the roof.
Power Sunroof
This large power sunroof slides to let the light in or tilts open to circulate fresh air throughout the cabin. When fully open, it provides a fantastic view of the sky for everyone to enjoy. For particularly hot or sunny days, the manual sunshade slides across to provide cool comfort.
Generous Ground Clearance
With 220 mm of ground clearance, the Outback features genuine go-anywhere capability. What’s more, the long-travel suspension system helps make quick work of rough roads, unpaved surfaces and deep snow. These qualities give the Outback the ability to tackle the most challenging of driving conditions with supreme confidence.
Aluminum Alloy Wheels
The Subaru Outback is available with three different aluminum alloy wheel packages. The Touring trim level features 17-inch alloy wheels with 5 double-spoke design. The Limited trim level showcases 18-inch alloy wheels in high-gloss silver with 10-spoke design. And the Premier model receives 18-inch dark grey and machine-finished alloy wheels.
Headlights
In low-light conditions or when the windshield wipers are in use, the headlights automatically turn on to provide greater visibility. All models equipped with EyeSight® feature High Beam Assist, which automatically turns the high beams off to avoid distracting other drivers. For added security, the Outback also features a standard welcome lighting system, which turns the headlights and interior lights on as the driver approaches or leaves the car. Sleek LED headlights are available on Limited and Premier models.
Aerodynamics
The Outback features a number of refinements designed to create superior aerodynamic performance. All 2.5i models come standard with the Active Grille Shutter, which opens and closes for optimum efficiency in all conditions. With the front grille shut, wind resistance is reduced and the engine warms up faster after starting up; when the grille is open, it helps increase engine cooling in hot conditions. The Outback also sports a sculpted exterior design and undercover, aerodynamic wheels and aerodynamic side mirrors.
Space, comfort and convenience to spare
From the inside, there’s no telling that the Outback is one of the most capable vehicles on the planet. Safety + security = confidence at all four corners
Over the past 60 years, Subaru has forged a reputation for building vehicles that offer superior levels of protection through the use of technologically advanced active and passive safety systems. The end result is a line of vehicles that pushes the envelope and regularly receives the highest possible ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). So it’s no surprise that the 2019 Subaru Outback is as robust in terms of safety standards as its rugged engineering would suggest.
Always on guard
The Outback boasts superior levels of active safety, a rock-solid reputation for accident avoidance and top marks from industry experts. The secret to its success is a combination of mechanical systems — such as Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time AWD, striking agility and fantastic visibility — and next-generation technologies, such as Vehicle Dynamics Control with Active Torque Vectoring, ABS and the available EyeSight®◊ driver assist technology.
Heightened Visibility
Smart engineering and forward-thinking design separate this SUV alternative from the crowd when it comes to outward visibility. With its healthy ground clearance, steeply raked windshield, unobtrusive A-pillars, front quarter windows, door-mounted side mirrors and lofty seating position, the Outback features fantastic sightlines in all directions.
EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology
The Outback is available with EyeSight®, which utilizes two cameras to monitor activity on the road ahead, help identify potential danger and provide assistance to the driver when needed most. This award-winning technology incorporates four different advanced active-safety systems: Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, and Vehicle Lane Departure and Sway Warning with Lane Keep Assist. With this feature, the Outback has earned the highest possible front-crash prevention rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)**.
High Beam Assist
Standard on models equipped with EyeSight®, High Beam Assist allows the driver to keep the high beams activated at all times. When the EyeSight stereo cameras detect an oncoming vehicle or the distance to the vehicle in front has reduced, the system automatically switches the headlights to low beams. When other vehicles are far enough away, the system turns the high beams on again.
Reverse Automatic Braking
Also included on Outback models equipped with EyeSight®, Reverse Automatic Braking detects obstacles behind the vehicle and automatically applies the brakes if a collision seems imminent. This system also incorporates warning features: different patterns of alarms according to the distance the car is away from an obstacle and a visual representation of the distance is projected onto the centre console screen.
Subaru Rear/Side Vehicle Detection System (SRVD)
The available SRVD system represents a big step towards full-perimeter preventive safety and has three distinct functions: Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Blind Spot Detection identifies vehicles behind the C-pillars and in other blind spots, while Lane Change Assist detects fast-approaching vehicles when changing lanes. Using a sensor in the back of the vehicle, Rear Cross Traffic Alert signals drivers of approaching vehicles while reversing, such as out of a parking space or driveway.
Rearview Camera
Being able to see behind you is not only a great convenience, it’s an invaluable active safety feature. This rearview camera is mounted close to the centre of the vehicle to capture a crystal-clear, distortion-free image of what’s behind your vehicle. This wide-angle image is then projected onto the centre console screen, along with guidelines that show how the vehicle trajectory changes with steering adjustments.
Auto-dimming Side Mirrors with Approach Lighting
When a vehicle approaches from behind or from an adjacent lane, these available mirrors automatically dim to protect your eyes from headlight glare. In addition, an approach lighting feature sees a beam of light projected from the mirrors to help you spot the door handles and avoid obstacles on the ground near the doors. The mirrors also house the Subaru Rear/Side Vehicle Detection system LED indicators, which have been moved to the inside of the housing for improved visibility.
Steering Responsive HeadLights
Available on the Limited and Premier (2.5i and 3.6R) trim levels, these LED headlights automatically angle in the direction of the corner to provide better illumination at night. The headlights also cast a brighter and whiter beam for improved visibility.
VDC with Active Torque Vectoring
The Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC)† system utilizes multiple sensors to assess when the vehicle is approaching the limits of stability and then automatically adjusts the AWD torque distribution, engine output and brakes at each wheel to help stay on-course. The system is further aided by Active Torque Vectoring, which automatically applies brakes to the inside front wheel and distributes more torque to the outside front wheel during cornering. These systems, standard on all models, work together to create superior stability, cornering prowess and accident avoidance capabilities.
† VDC is also known as electronic stability control
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
The ABS on the Outback incorporates the latest thinking in braking systems to ensure consistent and reliable performance under all possible driving conditions. The advances include Electronic Brake-force Distribution (which automatically adjusts front/rear brake pressure under different vehicle loads), Brake Override (which cuts engine power when the brakes are applied) and Brake Assist (which provides added stopping power in emergency-braking situations). The Hill Holder System, which helps prevent rollback when getting underway on steep inclines, is also controlled automatically by the braking system.
Stands and delivers
In the event that a collision proves unavoidable, it’s vitally important that a vehicle is strong enough and advanced enough to help protect all occupants from harm. As with all Subaru vehicles, the Outback features a wide range of passive safety systems engineered to deliver class-leading levels of protection. Exceptionally strong construction combined with the latest technologies helps minimize collision damage and, in turn, generate greater peace of mind.
Advanced Ring-shaped Reinforcement Frame
This advanced frame design incorporates high-tensile steel, connects the roof to the side pillars and the floor, and uses cross-members to create one super-strong structure that dissipates and diverts crash energy away from the passenger cabin. A front crumple zone provides further protection in the event of a frontal impact.
Airbags
The Outback features a full complement of supplemental restraints, including dual-stage front airbags, front seat side-impact airbags, front seat cushion airbags and side-curtain airbags with rollover sensors for front and rear outboard occupants. This unwavering focus on passive safety represents an integral part of the Subaru brand promise.
Whiplash-reducing Front Seats
Every aspect of the Outback is engineered to better withstand the effects of a collision and to protect passengers from injury. The front seats, for example, are designed with rigid frames, firm headrests and energy-absorbing inner seat springs to help mitigate the effects of a rear-end collision and reduce the chances of whiplash.
Break-away Engine
The SUBARU BOXER engine and transmission feature low-profile designs that are also mounted low in the frame of the vehicle. In the event of a head-on collision, both the engine and transmission are designed to absorb impact energy, then break away from the vehicle structure and drop below the passenger cabin for added protection.
Superior engineering, unsurpassed driver confidence
At the core of the Subaru Outback is the stuff of legend. The legendary Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time AWD system. The choice of two potent and efficient SUBARU BOXER engines. A supremely robust chassis that sets the stage for legendary durability. And a long-travel independent suspension system that’s been developed over decades. These technological features form the reason why this SUV alternative delivers superb handling, rugged all-road/all-weather capability and a level of confidence behind the wheel that is unmatched in its class.
The world-famous SUBARU BOXER engine
The Subaru Outback is available with the choice of two SUBARU BOXER engines — either a 2.5L 4-cylinder or a 3.6L 6-cylinder. The 2.5L engine is designed to perfectly balance powerful response with outstanding fuel economy. This engine comes standard with Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) equipment that reduces smog-forming emissions to near zero without compromising performance. The 3.6L engine has been engineered for superior rigidity and minimal internal friction, creating smooth power and surprising fuel efficiency. Both engines operate on regular unleaded fuel.
Transmission + Symmetrical AWD
The Subaru Outback is available with two different versions of the Lineartronic® CVT, one linked to the 2.5-litre 4-cylnder SUBARU BOXER and the other paired with the 3.6-litre 6-cylinder SUBARU BOXER. Each drivetrain is fully integrated with the Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time AWD system to create unsurpassed levels of control and confidence under all conditions.
Lineartronic® CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission)
The Lineartronic CVT has been engineered for superior efficiency, quietness and driveability. This transmission is connected to an active torque split AWD system that instantaneously controls torque distribution front to rear in response to driving conditions. The Outback 3.6R utilizes a special CVT engineered to handle higher-torque engines. Both versions of the Lineartronic are compact and lightweight, giving this SUV alternative the fuel-efficiency of a front-wheel drive vehicle and the confidence of full-time AWD.
X-Mode
With the push of a button, X-MODE automatically controls the engine, AWD system and braking system to help tackle the trickiest of conditions and bring even more rugged capability into sharp focus. By managing the torque distribution to all four wheels, X-MODE delivers added confidence and stability, even on uneven surfaces and during challenging climbs. The system incorporates Hill Descent Control for descending steep inclines and a Hill Holder System for preventing rollback when starting on steep inclines.
Hill Descent Control
With the X-MODE system activated, Hill Descent Control automatically maintains a constant speed when travelling down steep inclines. With this system activated, the driver is free from the demands of controlling the brakes, and can focus exclusively on steering and negotiating curves in the road.
Robust Chassis
The chassis of the Subaru Outback was engineered to incorporate significant amounts of high-strength tensile steel and produce significant levels of torsional rigidity, resulting in a quiet, smooth and ultra-safe vehicle. The suspension system is tuned to deliver more stability and the optimum balance between on-road agility and off-road capability. Lastly, the steering was calibrated to be direct, created an SUV alternative with surprising agility.
Front Suspension
The McPherson strut-type front suspension system delivers superior comfort, crisper handling and reduced vibration on all types of road surfaces. Enhanced struts and shocks deliver even control, composure and ride quality for all models. The Outback also features a small turning circle for great maneuverability, a wide track for superior stability and 220 mm of ground clearance to help clear obstacles in the road.
Rear Suspension
The double-wishbone rear suspension system has been fine-tuned to offer crisp handling characteristics, maximum tire contact with the road and a superbly controlled ride over uneven surfaces. The shape of the rear support sub-frame has been engineered to deliver superior body rigidity, fantastic ride quality and minimal vibration. This design also delivers a quiet ride over even the roughest road surfaces and opens up more interior space for passengers and their cargo.
