Confidence from the word “go”
Subaru has forged a reputation for building vehicles that offer superior levels of protection through the use of the most technologically advanced active and passive safety systems available. The end result: vehicles that inspire confidence on every type of road, under all possible conditions and at all times. The Subaru Impreza has earned top safety ratings year after year and this trend continues with the latest-generation version—the strongest Impreza ever built and the one equipped with more powerful safety systems than ever before.
Always on guard, always active
The combination of a world-class all-wheel drive system, striking agility, superior visibility and class-leading active safety systems such as EyeSight®◊ Driver Assist Technology, Subaru Rear/Side Vehicle Detection system and ABS gives the Subaru Impreza excellent evasive capabilities. After all, the best way to stay safe in an accident situation is to avoid the accident in the first place.
EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology
Several Impreza models are available with EyeSight, which utilizes two cameras to monitor activity on the road ahead, help identify potential danger and provide assistance to the driver when needed most. EyeSight features several different advanced active-safety systems: Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, and Vehicle Lane Departure, Sway Warning with Lane Keep Assist. Powered by this award-winning driver assist system, past versions of the Subaru Impreza earned the highest possible front crash prevention rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)**.
High Beam Assist
This system automatically switches from high beams to low beams when approaching other vehicles in the road ahead and then automatically switches back to generate superior visibility. High Beam Assist is available on Sport and Sport-tech trims equipped with EyeSight®.
Reverse Automatic Braking
Using proximity sensors, this advanced system warns you as your vehicle approaches an obstacle and will automatically apply the brakes if it appears that a collision is imminent. Reverse Automatic Braking is available on Sport and Sport-tech trims equipped with EyeSight®.
Subaru Rear/Side Vehicle Detection (SRVD)
The SRVD system uses sensors to detect other vehicles and has three distinct functions designed to promote higher levels of safety. Using LED indicators located inside the mirror surround, Blind Spot Detection identifies vehicles approaching from behind the C-pillars and in other blind spots. Lane Change Assist detects fast-approaching vehicles when you’re about to change lanes. Lastly, while reversing out of a driveway or parking space, Rear Cross Traffic Alert signals when vehicles are approaching from either side of your vehicle.
Rearview Camera
Being able to see behind is not only a great convenience, it’s a great safety feature. This standard rearview camera captures a crystal-clear image of what’s behind your vehicle and projects it, along with dynamic guide lines, onto the centre console screen. For an even more natural, distortion-free view, the lens is protected by a hydrophilic coating and the camera is located close to the centre of the vehicle to provide the widest possible angle.
Steering Responsive Headlights
These LED headlights automatically angle in the direction of the turn, providing better illumination and increased levels of safety. The headlights themselves also cast a brighter and whiter beam for improved visibility. This system is available on Sport and Sport-tech trims.
Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC)
The standard VDC* system utilizes sensors to assess whether the vehicle is following its intended course. When the limits of stability are approached, the system automatically adjusts the AWD torque distribution‡, engine output and brakes at each wheel to help keep the vehicle under control. The Sport-tech version also features Active Torque Vectoring, which applies braking force to the inside front wheel and distributes more torque to the outside wheel during cornering to help the car turn better. These systems give drivers of all abilities the feeling of added security and increased confidence under all possible scenarios.
* VDC is also known as electronic stability control
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
The ABS incorporates the latest thinking on anti-skid prevention, as well as other advanced features designed with added safety in mind. Electronic Brake-force Distribution automatically adjusts front/rear brake pressure for consistent performance under different vehicle loads. Brake Override cuts engine power when the brakes and accelerator are applied simultaneously. Brake Assist automatically provides added stopping power in panic-braking situations. The Hill Holder System prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards on inclines. Finally, the entire braking system has been engineered for quick response through the use of a short pedal stroke, high-quality brake pads and next-generation calipers.
Drives peace of mind
In the event that an accident is unavoidable, every Subaru boasts a wide range of passive safety systems that are designed to deliver class-leading levels of protection. The latest Impreza is built upon the Subaru Global Platform, an innovative design that is stronger in all areas and features an enhanced array of safety technologies. These advances work together to minimize impact forces on occupants and, in turn, generate much greater peace of mind.
Advanced Ring-shaped Reinforcement Frame
This proprietary advanced frame design, able to absorb 40% more impact energy than on the previous generation Impreza, strengthens the passenger compartment by linking the roof to the side pillars and the floor. As a result, impact energy coming from all directions is dissipated and diverted away from the passenger cabin. The reengineering process has resulted in a stronger frame and joint structures, boosting the already impressive safety standards.
Injury-reducing Seats and Seatbelt Systems
The front seats utilize frames, energy-absorbing mounting and active headrests to reduce the chance of whiplash. Height-adjustable front seatbelts with pretensioners and rear outboard seatbelts with pretensioners hold passengers firmly in place, while load limiters ease peak forces to the chest. A locking tongue system is incorporated into the front seatbelts to further reduce potential injuries. The ISO-FIX/LATCH system, positioned for quick and easy access, helps secure younger passengers riding in compatible child safety seats.
Break-away Engine
Every Subaru goes above and beyond common practice when it comes to your safety. In the event of a head-on collision, the SUBARU BOXER engine and transmission are designed to absorb impact, and then break away from the vehicle structure and drop below the passenger cabin for added protection.
Airbags
The Impreza features a rollover sensor and a full complement of supplemental restraints. These restraints include dual-stage front airbags, front seat side-impact airbags, driver’s side knee airbag, and side-curtain airbags for front and rear outboard occupants. An unwavering focus on passive safety represents an integral part of the Subaru brand promise.
Superior engineering builds confidence from the core
At the core of the Subaru Impreza is the stuff of legend: the Subaru symmetrical full-time AWD system, the SUBARU BOXER engine, the rally-honed, long-travel independent suspension system, and a platform engineered for incredible strength and safety. The Subaru core technology is the reason why this compact car delivers superb handling, dynamic all-road/all-weather capability and a level of confidence behind the wheel that is simply unmatched in its class.
The spirited SUBARU BOXER engine
The 2.0L naturally aspirated SUBARU BOXER 4-cylinder, reengineered for this generation model with approximately 80% new components, delivers crisp response, stellar fuel-efficiency and striking reliability. The design of this engine creates natural balance and smoothness, the free-breathing intake and free-flowing exhaust enhance overall performance, and the Dual Active Valve Control System and direct injection system produce dynamic low-end response. Whether paired with the Lineartronic® CVT or the 5-speed manual, the latest Impreza delivers an efficient and enjoyable driving experience. This engine also comes standard with Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) equipment that reduces smog-forming emissions to near zero without compromising performance in the least.
Transmissions + Symmetrical AWD
The Subaru Impreza offers the choice of either a 5-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission (CVT), each designed to work with different versions of the legendary Subaru symmetrical full-time AWD system to create optimum response to the complete range of driving conditions.
5-speed Manual Transmission (5MT)
The 5MT is linked to a viscous-coupling limited-slip centre differential that provides near neutral handling and maximum control for the driver. The feeling of the transmission itself is crisp, intuitive and direct, making this choice tailor-made for those seeking sporty satisfaction from their time behind the wheel.
Lineartronic® CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission)
This transmission is linked to a multi-plate transfer clutch AWD system that offers predictable handling and automatically shifts torque to the back wheels to balance power distribution under hard acceleration or in low-traction conditions. The lightweight CVT features a wide range of ratios, Auto Stepped Speed Control that mimics traditional gearshifts and a 7-speed manual mode. With paddle shifters offered on certain models, the Lineartronic CVT provides a seamless shift feel, is highly responsive at all engine speeds and helps make the Impreza one of the most fuel-efficient compact AWD vehicle in North America**.
Rock-solid, super-sporty chassis
The Subaru Impreza is built upon a lightweight, ultra-rigid chassis that delivers a strong, secure feeling and sets the stage for superior agility. The long-travel fully independent suspension system and wide track gives this sporty compact fun-to-drive handling, a smooth ride over the rough stuff and a clear edge over the competition.
Subaru Global Platform
This generation of Impreza was the first Subaru vehicle to ride on the new Subaru Global Platform . This design sees dramatic increases to body rigidity through the use of more high-tensile materials. Other benefits of this advanced platform include reduced twisting forces on the frame and body through the suspension system. This, in turn, creates a smoother and more comfortable ride, highly responsive and precise steering, excellent straight-line stability, and low levels of noise and vibration.
Front Suspension
The MacPherson front strut-type suspension system features stabilizer bars for greater stability, direct response and improved driver feedback. This design utilizes a racing-derived, K-shaped cross-member brace to lessen lateral forces and vibration. When combined with a very wide track, this suspension system gives the Impreza crisp steering, remarkable handling and a surprisingly composed ride. Fine-tuned over decades of punishing competition on the World Rally circuit, this suspension system is an absolute strength of the Subaru technical package.
Rear Suspension
The double-wishbone rear suspension system is engineered to reduce noise and vibration, while improving control and stability. This system utilizes an available rear stabilizer bar for a smoother ride and a truly stable feeling. The rear stabilizer bar is mounted directly to the body to reduce body roll by 50%. The rear bushings and shock absorbers are fine-tuned to minimize harshness, producing a comfortable ride that manages to soak up bumps easily, yet still give the Impreza a genuinely sporty edge. This suspension system is also designed not to encroach into the cargo area, so it also preserves storage space.
